Lasik Laser Surgery is Proven Safe by the FDA
by: Charles Moore

Lasik or laser in situ keratomileusis means "to shape the cornea within using a laser". Laser surgery if done by an experienced laser eye surgeon or ophthalmologist has been proven to be safe despite risk factors. Its computer guided precision accuracy allows the surgery to be completed in less than 30 minutes. Outcome for most patients is 20/20 vision or better.

Before the surgery you will need to schedule a baseline eye examination. Your ophthalmologist will also determine if you are a candidate by evaluation of risk factors or any other abnormal findings that may disqualify you. Some risk factors that may disqualify you are thin corneas because some corneal tissue is ablated (reshaped) to correct your refractive error; abnormal corneal curvature which indicates a weak corneal; dry eyes because corneal nerves that stimulated tears are cut during the Lasik laser eye surgery; large pupils since patients may be prone to seeing halos or have night vision problems and previous refractive surgery especially radial keratotomy (RK) may complicate additional procedures.

After your examination with your ophthalmologist take time to think about the risks and benefits and read printed handouts. After you have had time to consider if you want to go forward with the surgery you will need to meet with your surgeon and sign a consent form.

The day of the surgery do not wear makeup, lotions or perfumes to prevent infection and also they may interfere with the function of the laser. Arrangements for transportation will need to be made to and from your ophthalmologist. You will not be allowed to drive home after surgery.

Lasik laser procedure will be done with first a microkeratome to create a corneal flap. After the flap is created the corneal thickness will be measured. After surgery it is important that you do not touch or rub your eye. Some symptoms that you may notice are light sensitivity, glare, haze or halos all of these will improve over a few days.

Vision may continue to improve over three to six months. In few cases there are complications as with dry eyes, optical halos or haze, and in rare cases regression in vision. There are no cases of blindness related to Lasik laser surgery.

Before they plunk down thousands per eye on Laser Lasik, Houston consumers need to consult with a Houston Lasik Surgeon to consider the various options available to them. The surgeon will be able to explain the complicated aspects of Lasik surgery in Houston Texas, pre-operative and postoperative procedures, as well as what to realistically expect after the operation is over.

Check your local listing for a Texas qualified Lasik laser surgeon in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas areas.
