Lasik Surgery Growing in India
by: Dr.Arjun

Lasik is the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure. You may hear people calling it "LASIX," but the name is actually short for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis." Why is it so popular? LASIK has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision is usually achieved by the very next day.

Candidate for Lasik Surgery:

The target population for this kind of procedure is any person who would like to get rid himself/herself from dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Though cosmetic is the chief reason for people to opt for this procedure a small number of patients may require it for vocational benefits & lifestyle benefits. This is particularly true of professionals in various sports like swimming, cricket, squash, badminton, skiing, tennis and other outdoor sports and for people seeking employment in the armed forces or merchant navy and professional pilots and individuals with interest in acting and modeling. This is also a procedure of choice for persons who are intolerant to contact lenses (soft, semi-soft and hard), which give rise to irritation, watering and redness of the eyes.

The Procedure of Lasik Surgery:

This is an outpatient procedure that usually takes 5-10 minutes per eye. The actual laser treatment usually takes a few seconds. First you will lie on the motorized bed. The eyes are anesthetized with eye drops only. The head is positioned under the laser. Soft clips keep the eyelids gently and comfortably open during the treatment. You will be asked to look at a soothing green blinking light during the entire procedure.

During the treatment, an instrument called the microkeratome creates a corneal flap to make it a painless procedure. The computerized Excimer laser uses a beam of light to gently reshape the cornea so as to alter its curvature to the desired extent. The flap when replaced on the new corneal curvature allows images to be sharply focused on the retina. The goal is to eliminate or greatly reduce the dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

Once the procedure is completed, a soft contact lens or shield is sometimes placed on the eye. A post - procedure eye examination is performed and eye drops are prescribed. There may be mild discomfort for a few hours after the procedure.

Say good-bye to dependence on glasses and contact lenses

Patients not only have a different speed of healing, but also have different levels of tolerance in performing various activities after the procedure. Some get back to work the next day without any problem. Nevertheless, the following care should be taken after Lasik.

·Rest as much as possible on the day of the procedure. Sleep will help you recover faster.

·Do not rub your eyes for one month.

·Avoid swimming, steam bath, saunas and Turkish bath for one month. Bathe carefully closing your eyes under the shower and not allowing water to go in the eyes.

·Avoid gardening or fieldwork or dirty and dusty environment for one week.

·You can watch TV or read in moderation within 2 days of the procedure. Though not harmful, doing these activities for a long time could make you feel tired and cause strain in the eyes.

·Post-operative care is as important as the surgery. Do not forget to use the prescribed eye drops.

·To avoid glare it is advisable to use sunglasses for 2 weeks when going outdoors.
Compared to the conventional PRK Excimer laser procedure, today, LASIK is considered by virtually all refractive surgeons worldwide to be the procedure of choice today.

The following are some of the benefits of Lasik.
· Quick visual recovery
· Very low infection rate
· Very low risk of scarring
· High degree of predictability
· Low enhancement rate
· Relatively quick procedure
· Minimal discomfort
· Preservation of all corneal layers
· Excellent ocular integrity post-treatment
· Wide range of correctable prescriptions

Results of Lasik Surgery:

Results are generally very satisfactory and it has been reported that in carefully selected cases more than 90 % achieve unaided visual acuity of 6/12 or better (i.e., 6/12 6/9 6/6 6/5). There is a subjective difference in degree of satisfaction among the patients. Some patients with a vision of 6/12 may feel very happy while other may be dissatisfied even with a vision of 6/5.

Medical Tourism Rising in India:

Medical tourists have good cause to seek out care beyond the United States for many reasons. In some regions of the world, state-of-the-art medical facilities are hard to come by, if they exist at all; in other countries, the public health-care system is so overburdened that it can take years to get needed care. In Britain and Canada, for instance, the waiting period for a hip replacement can be a year or more, while in Mumbai or Bangalore, a patient can be in the operating room the morning after getting off a plane. For many medical tourists, though, the real attraction is price. Away from home and in the lap of nature is the ideal way to recover from a surgery. When the costs involved are reasonable, it becomes even more attractive. High quality of care, cutting edge surgical skill and low recovery time make it compelling. This is especially so in the case of Lasik surgery, Returning home from a vacation with a relaxed mind and a clear vision can be a refreshing thought.
