Do You Know That Your Allergies May Be Caused By Your Carpet
by: Jcorkern10
There are so many people that have such a variety of allergies today. It has become a common fear that carpeting can make these allergies worse. For people that love their wall to wall carpeting, you might think this could be a problem. There are some explanations and some solutions to this problem that can be helpful.

One misconception about new carpet is that it can seem to cause allergic reactions and give off a certain elements called VOC's or volatile organic compounds. These VOC's were once thought to be produced by the carpeting itself, but has since been linked to VOC's that are in the air in the places where the carpets are produced.

Usually within several days after a carpet is installed these VOC's will diminish and disappear. Once the carpet has been aired out, so to speak, the problem is gone. These VOC's were also once thought to be harmful, but low levels of VOC's have been found to not be harmful. Carpeting can be purchased now that will be labeled as to the amount of VOC's it contains. This label will usually be green.

Most people will find that if they are having an allergic reaction when they are around carpeting, it is not usually the carpeting fibers themselves that are causing the problems. Dust mites, dirt, and mildew that can get into carpeting are more likely to be the culprits that cause allergic reactions. These occupants in carpeting will occur on a larger scale when carpeting is not cleaned regularly or properly.

Using a vacuum cleaner with a hepa filter will help to reduce the number of dust mites that can be thrown back into the air from vacuuming. Vacuuming regularly will reduce the amount of dust and dirt that can become embedded into carpets over time.

Shampooing a carpet properly and making sure that it is not over saturated during cleaning is important in helping to prevent mildew. Cleaning up and drying spills quickly will help the mildew problem too. Using professional carpet cleaners is a good idea if you are not sure about doing it yourself.

Carpets can actually trap some allergens and prevent them from flying through the air as easily. This can be helpful in some cases. So the key to living with the carpeting you love but not with allergens you hate, the secret is all in the cleaning and care you provide for your carpeting.
