Getting Results with Home Treatment of Ovarian Cysts
by: Maryparker
Usually a functional cyst is not life threatening and will go away by itself. Yet if a cyst grows very large, then twisting, bleeding or breaking may occur with serious pain. Ovarian cysts that are functional are in fact tiny "bags" which are generated on the ovary when ovulation occurs. The cyst has the job of retaining the egg as it matures and generally the "bag" is reabsorbed when the egg has been let go. If the egg is not let go or the hole in the bag closes after the egg, swelling can occur with fluid retention. Treating ovarian cysts at home is still a matter of debate amongst medical personnel.

Ovarian cyst home treatment should only be considered if a proper diagnosis has been done by a specialist because there is a possibility that the cyst is malignant. Contraceptive pills can stop ovulation and when this happens there is much less probability that cysts will form. This in turn lessens the pain and other concomitant symptoms. The remedy is known as therapy by natural progesterone and is done by the injection of natural progesterone into the circulatory blood system, which therefore lessens the secretion of luteinizing hormone levels. The progesterone is considered by each ovary as a sign that the other ovary has ovulated. As a result no ovulation happens. Using birth control pills in the period between the tenth and the twenty-sixth day of the cycle has been shown to lessen the effects of luteinizing hormones. As a result there is no stimulation of the cyst and after one or two further cycles it will simply be reabsorbed without further ado.

The discussion has not yet been finished concerning oral contraceptives as a remedy for ovarian cysts. The indications are from experts that a cyst does not grow smaller as a function of whether or not a woman takes birth control pills. Even if it is effective, using birth control pills for the control of ovarian cysts is not usually suggested as a treatment. Additional cysts may be prevented from forming by birth control pills but the pills cannot help the ones that are already there.

Patients should always consult their physician first, as with any medicament. The vitamins B and E which are found for example in whole grains have the ability to help adjust the levels of hormones. Both vitamins B and E have been proven to be of benefit to the liver and the ovaries. To go one better, treatment by contraceptive pills is often prescribed together with a method of hormonal contraception. The dominance by estrogen typically results in PMS or Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, and in this case patients are often prescribed a level of 600 I. C. of vitamin E, a magnesium supplement of 300mg per day and vitamin E at 50mg per day.

Acetaminophen, or Aleve and Advil, which are all painkillers that can be bought over the counter, can counter inflation to increase comfort levels. However there are certain disadvantages and using them should be really kept to a minimum. Treating ovarian cysts naturally at home can help to lessen the discomfort experienced with functional ovarian cysts. The hot water bottle and the warm bath are both simple solutions to lessen muscular cramps. Ovarian cyst sufferers should also avoid constipation. Constipation can increase pelvic discomfort, even if it does not have any direct bearing on ovarian cysts.

NSAIDs only work when used immediately after detection of symptoms. Side effects may include giddiness and feelings of nausea. Abuse of these medicaments can even cause liver damage and kidney failure. A woman drinking more than two alcoholic drinks per day should not take Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen decreases pain and reduces fever but does not help with inflammation. To counter inflammation, aspirin and ibuprofen are more effective. It is also a good idea to empty the bladder as soon as you feel the urge to urinate, so as to reduce pressure and increase relief. To soothe those tense muscles and moods, herbal teas with chamomile, raspberry and mint are suggested. Sugar intake should be reduced as should both caffeine and alcohol. Remember that it is best that a qualified specialist undertakes the treatment of ovarian cysts.

Although home remedies can reduce the symptoms, home treatments for ovarian cysts should never be thought of as the only option. A holistic approach is the only sure way of treating the varying cysts and preventing them from returning. Almost nine out of ten ovarian cysts are benign meaning that they are not cancerous. The ovarian cyst home treatment also depends on the size of the cyst and any symptoms that are detected with it. For small and symptom-less cysts, it may also be wise to wait and see as long as you also have regular medical checkups.
