Therapy Options for Cystic Acne
by: Keion Moradi

Cystic acne is a form of acne vulgaris, a severe form of common acne. Acne vulgaris occurs deep below the surface of the skin. It takes a longer time to heal, can cause scars and be quite painful.

Cystic acne can be present in adults and teens. Since cystic acne doesn't normally respond to over-the-counter treatment, scheduling a consultation with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon is absolutely necessary. Read on to learn about the latest therapy options for cystic acne.

Topical Therapy for Cystic Acne

Your doctor may prescribe a topical cream or ointment for fighting cystic acne. Tretinoin is the most common topical treatment, also referred to as Retin-A. During treatment, symptoms can get worse before they improve. The skin can also appear red and irritated while adjusting to treatment.

Antibiotic Therapy for Cystic Acne

Some cystic acne may be more responsive to antibiotics. Isotretinoin, or Accutane, is an oral medication that is taken for about six months. Antibiotic therapy for cystic acne can also be a solution for acne on various parts of the body.

Accutane works on the causes of acne by controlling the production of sebaceous glands. It can improve skin tone and diminish scars. When taking antibiotics, it may take a couple of months before you notice an improvement.

Chemical Peel for Cystic Acne

A chemical peel may be necessary as a way to reduce acne scarring and to prevent future breakouts. A chemical peel is a noninvasive plastic surgery procedure. A chemical solution is applied, removing the damaged outer layers of the skin and making room for healthier skin growth.

Chemical peels are available in different magnitudes. Light chemical peels are usually alpha-hydroxy or glycolic acid based. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are stronger and more effective than light peels. Deep phenol peels provide the most dramatic results.

A chemical peel has added benefits of reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Many people consider it the noninvasive alternative to facial plastic surgery. There are benefits and limitations for each type of chemical peel. In general, light peels and TCA peels are less intensive, but multiple sessions are necessary. Deep phenol peels require two weeks for recovery and the skin loses its ability to produce pigment.

Blue Light Therapy for Cystic Acne

Blue Light therapy is a fairly new procedure for fighting acne and underlying causes. Patients undergo multiple weekly sessions, exposing the skin to safe, UV-free blue light. Each session lasts for about 30 minutes until skin has improved. Results from blue light therapy for cystic acne can last for several months. However, it may be necessary to schedule follow-up treatments in order to maintain results.

Blue light therapy can also be combined with photodynamic therapy. A topical solution, referred to as Levulan, is applied to the skin prior to blue light therapy. Levulan makes the skin more receptive to treatment and can improve results. Some temporary side effects may include redness, peeling and irritation.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for Cystic Acne

Another new method, intense pulsed light therapy, involves intense flashes of light to the skin. The procedure can take up to an hour and has proven to be quite effective, as well. Intense pulsed light therapy for cystic acne may require multiple sessions. Some patients require a cooling gel to lessen the heat intensity from the light flashes. Redness is a normal side effect and usually subsides within a few hours.
